Why choose small group tutoring over drop-in?
Small group tutoring offers a more structured and consistent learning experience. You’ll meet with the same group of students and the same tutor each week, which helps build a sense of community. It’s a great option if you prefer routine, want ongoing support, and like collaborating with peers in a focused setting.
In contrast, drop-in tutoring is more flexible and works well for quick questions or occasional help, but it may not offer the same level of continuity or depth of support.
Some students choose to use both small group and drop-in tutoring to get comprehensive support while navigating challenging courses.
What are the expectations and time commitment of joining a group?
Small group tutoring requires a commitment of 1 to 2 hours per week for about 12 weeks of the semester.
All students who join a group sign a Tutee Contract that includes consistently attending sessions, coming prepared with specific questions or concepts you’d like clarified, actively participating, and respectfully engaging with your tutor and peers.
There are no groups currently available for my course. What should I do?
Small group tutoring is offered on a first come, first served basis. We encourage those looking for small group tutoring to sign up as early as possible in the semester! Luckily, there are still a few tutoring options to look into:
- Check out GUTS Drop-in Tutoring schedule to see if there is tutoring available for the course or subject you are looking for
- Visit the central Learning Support at UW-Madison website to see a full list of all the learning centers on campus where you may be able to find assistance in a particular course or subject
