Online Platforms and Apps for Language Learning | GUTS Tip

Although there are plenty of language-learning opportunities online, especially with the recent increase in online learning, it is hard to sift through all of the applications and resources to find what works for your style of learning. These applications can be useful for memorizing vocabulary, picking up new phrases and terms, and communicating with other language learners or native speakers. Depending on what you’re working on, certain apps may be more your speed than others.

To help with your process of finding language learning applications that work for you, we’ve compiled several resources that you might want to check out if you’re looking for ways to change up your studying.

	HelloTalk This mobile application is used to connect language learners with proficient speakers of their target language. You can use this app to message others or make posts, all while others can add corrections to what you’ve posted. This app also includes tools for translating and pronouncing messages. Even if you’re not interested in practicing a specific language, this app offers a way to meet individuals from all over the world in a safe and monitored environment.
	Duolingo This application is accessible both on desktop and mobile and provides lessons in a variety of languages, covering basic introductory information to more complex topics. Language learning is fun with Duolingo with its fun activities and interesting graphics that are paired with the language lessons. And if you consider yourself a little bit lazy when it comes to practicing everyday, Duolingo’s slightly ominous reminder messages definitely do the trick in encouraging users to practice for the day.
	italki This online learning platform allows language learners to connect with teachers or tutors in a 1-on-1 tutoring environment. These lessons can also be very flexible depending on your schedule.
	Lingoda This platform allows learners of English, German, French, and Spanish to join small groups learning the same language as you. In these classes, learners can practice their oral skills all while receiving feedback from a proficient speaker. These classes are scheduled to fit what works for you and they offer classes for all levels of learners.
